Will The Favourite win best picture at Oscars 2019

THE FAVOURITE has proven itself to be a formidable opponent at the awards circuit this year. Could the Olivia Coleman fronted flick win Best Picture at the Oscars?

The Favourite has seen its star Olivia Colman pick up the BAFTA for Leading Actress as Queen Anne. Rachel Weisz, who stars as Anne’s confidant and sometimes lover, also won for Best Supporting Actress. And the movie also picked up the Best Costume award but can it win Best Picture at the Oscars?

Despite the slew of awards The Favourite has won thus far, the historical film did not snag the coveted Best Film award at the BAFTAs, losing out to Roma.

However, this doesn’t mean the drama can’t win at the 2019 Academy Awards. Oddsmakers place Roma at the forefront to win, though historically no foreign language movie has won Best Picture. According to William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams: “The Favourite certainly had a night to remember but the odds suggest they could struggle at the Oscars.” William Hill has Roma at 2/7, Green Book at 9/2 and the Favourite with 10/1.

BlacKkKlansman and Bohemian Rhapsody are tied at 25/1 and Black Panther and A Star Is Born are tied at 33/1. In last place is Vice, with 100/1 of winning Best Picture. As for The Favourite’s cast, William Hill list Olivia Colman at 7/2 for Best Actress – but she faces close competition against Glenn Close for her a portrayal of Joan in The Wife. Rachel Weisz has 6/1 odds to win Best Supporting Actress.

The Favourite also saw Oliva Colman win the Best Actress Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.

Many oddsmakers and movie fans alike will look to the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards as an indicator for Oscars.

However, the voting bloc for the Oscars is much larger, with a pool of approximately 8,000 voters casting their opinion.

The plot of The Favourite reads: “In the early 18th century, England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving.

“A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne, and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead, while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper.

“When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots.”

The Favourite is now playing in cinemas.
